I’ve now been let down twice this month at the movies. First with the epic disaster that is Clash of the Titans and now with Date Night. Date Night lures you in with two awesome comedy personalities, Steve Carell and Tina Fey, but falls flat when it comes to producing any “laugh out loud” moments. It still made for an enjoyable evening but I guess I was expecting more.
The movie follows Carell and Fey as the Fosters, a married suburban couple that is very set in their daily routine. In an effort to stray from the rut they are stuck in, they decide to spend their Friday date night in Manhattan where they are unable to get a table at a trendy restaurant. At the brink of losing hope, they decide to take the reservation of the Triplehorns who failed to show up. That’s when their night takes an unfortunate turn for the worst. A couple of goons show up believing they are the “Triplehorns” causing the Fosters to spend the rest of the night dodging them in the big city and fearing for their lives.
One of the funnier scenes is when they first encounter Marky Mark (or Mark Wahlberg) a muscular private detective that refuses to put a shirt on despite Carell’s discomfort as his wife lights up at the sight of him. The movie had many of those kind of funny awkward moments that Carell and Fey are known best for from their respected tv shows, The Office and 30 Rock. However, pair the two awkward comedians together and it could lead to a bomb of awkward that is one Michael Cera shy of exploding. Tina Fey is a smart and witty personality that shines when it comes to bouncing off of outrageous characters like Tracy Morgan. This movie was missing that kind of bouncing board but still produces a few one-line zingers like “why don’t you zip your vagina!”
Date Night works for a first date due to there being nothing offensive about it to scare your date away. It’s a very safe movie but I don’t care for safe. For me it’s go bold or go home. Don’t try to appease the widest audience possible by watering everything down, leaving it devoid of any standout moments worthy of discussing.
I’m now putting my money on the comic book based movie Kick Ass, which I failed to give any recognition to when writing about movies for April.

Steve Carell and Tina Fey are a horrible couple. They are basically the same character, bouncing off a straight man they work well, but bouncing them off each other isn’t working. Lots of joke setup, no pay off. Seems most of the comedy was scripted as “Okay, now improv something” and it didn’t come off that well. I wonder if anyone from 30 Rock will ever be able to make a funny movie.
Steve Carell has done well as a supporting character in movies. The only real hit I can think of where he was in a leading role was 40 Year Old Virgin. That was hilarious but he was working with some great comedic actors as well as Judd Apatow and I’ve yet to see a bad Judd Apatow movie (I haven’t seen Funny People). Carell should try doing more roles like in Little Miss Sunshine. I can see him doing well at that like Robin Williams in his serious roles.
