Hollywood is all about remakes now a days that good original scripts tend to get lost and never made. I am glad that there is one original film that will be out this Friday and it is called, PAUL. Paul is an original script written by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) and directed by Greg Mottola (SuperBad, Adventureland).
The story surrounds two British comic book geeks, Clive and Graeme (Pegg and Frost) that go across the U.S. to check out all the places that had alien encounters. Just when they reach outside of Area 51, they run into Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) who is running away from an Agent Zoil (Jason Bateman) who is being commanded by “The Big Guy”. Zoil, runs into, Agent Haggard & O’Reilly (Bill Hader and Joe Lo Truglio) two agents trying to figure out what Zoil is after and take his place to find their way into the bigger picture. Clive and Graeme are discovered when they park their RV at a station owned by Ruth, a religious fanatic (Kristen Wiig) and her Dad. She finds them with Paul. Graeme, decide it’s best if they just “take her” along with them so she won’t have the chance to tell anyone they have Paul. The movie is them trying to get Paul a signal out to get him back home.
The movie comes out tomorrow so I will not spoil anything. This movie is for someone who really likes the old alien movies like ET, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star wars, and Aliens and doesn’t mind the in your face reference. The original jokes are in the movie but few and far between. With an R Rating, I honestly don’t think it will do great at the box office. If they would have made it PG-13 we would definitely see it in the top 5, but the crude humored Alien is what makes this movie and an original comedy I haven’t seen in awhile. I guess you can consider this the comedy to Super 8.
No doubt this has classic Pegg and Frost but the surprise to me was Seth Rogen. After seeing this I wouldn’t doubt that he continues doing voice acting, as he will be back in Kung Fu Panda 2. Seeing him in live action is great but he seems to only have one style of acting on screen, which we have seen in almost all his movies with the exception of Observe and Report. My advice to Rogen is to stick with voice acting or try and find a way out of your shell or safe zone of acting. But he and the CGI team are the shining star in this movie. They did an excellent job on Paul. According to what Rogen said on Conan, “They used the same technology as Avatar.” I never saw it in the trailer or credits, but there is a great cameo at the end that has to be the biggest pay off since, Bill Murray in Zombieland. I think most people may have seen it coming but I certainly didn’t. This movie is meant for people like myself and geeks alike but they could have toned down the movie references just a bit or have a more cleaver way of a pay off to it. For any normal Joe movie watcher out there I would recommend you wait for DVD.
